New York igazi Közép-Európa. A Guggenheim közép-európai modernizmus fotókiállítása, a Public Library Nádas Péter-beszélgetése, a Lengyel új hullám retrospektív az Anthology-ban, Boris Groys a New Museumban, és most a Milos Forman-retrospektív a MoMÁban. Forman különös figura: 1969 megérkezve New Yorkba egyből nekilátott a filmcsináláshoz, de első filmje (Take Off) még a csehszlovák világ nyomait viseli: a mindennapi élet paródiája, amerikai karakterekkel és problémákkal. Forman különös pozíciót foglal el a film történetében: kívülállóként nekiállt, és kultuszfilmet forgatott az amerikai társadalom összes jelenkori problémájáról.

Forgács Péter filmjét, a Miss Universe 1929-et játszották a MoMÁban vasárnap. Utána Moritz Rabinowitz történetét néztük meg az Urban Stages Theaterben.

Since the release of the movie ‘I am Legend’, that is, about a month an a half, the images linking New York City with natural scenes are overwhelming us. TV series, or advertisements, they’re all drawing inspiration from the juxtaposition of two ideas of the jungle: the forest and the city. There is nothing more stimulating  in an uncanny way than seeing the buildings of one’s everyday life overgrown by plants and trees. Transforming the present into a ruined past, a certain melancholy is haunting these images.

January 21 was Martin Luther King’s Day. A national holiday, thanks to a group of students and teachers who joined forces in some Midwest colleges, and repeatedly demanded from the authorities the recognition of the MLK Day. It was 40 years ago that MLK was shot in the face on his civil right campaign in Memphis.

They succeeded, thus creating another red letter day in the calendar. Nevertheless, the instant poll, organized daily in my regular Blue Spoon café, revealed that about a half of downtown workers, visiting the café, would work on January 21, despite its holiday status. I, as a municipal employee, didn’t.

So I went to celebrate. I walked down the few blocks from Classon Avenue, to ther Brooklyn Academy of Music, to enjoy the free program supported by the local shopping center. The program consisted of verious performances, a screening, and a civil rights movement concert, by famous gospel singers. I chose the screening. BAM’s movie theater was packed: you could sense the excitement of the spectators, mostly Afro-Americans. The movement songs on the screen were rapidly joined by the audience: they were all known and all sung throughout the room; a very touching moment.

The movie was capturing: it told not only about the heroic struggle of Memphis union and church leaders standing up for the city’s sanitation workers rights, but also the strategic mistakes MLK made in the course of his campaign. Leaving the theater, I had no illusions about the success of the civil rights movement: our beloved neighborhood, although good-willingly balancing between gentrified tidyness and black poverty, is a good example for a highly polarized society.

A Berlin-évad egyik csúcspontja a PS1-ban megrendezett Fassbinder-kiállítás. A kiállítás középpontjában a 13 órás, felújított Berlin Alexanderplatz áll, amelyet 14 epizódban, epizódonként külön kabinban lehet megnézni a PS1 csodálatos terében. A kabinok között szabadon lehet kalandozni, így térbeliesítve Döblin történetének amúgy sem annyira lineáris idejét. Ha a G metró normálisan járna, minden hétvégémet ott tölteném.

Élj úgy, mintha mindig lenne holnap?

Az elmúlt hetekben végre bemutatták a már hónapok óta reklámozott katasztrófafilmet: ennek megfelelően már a világ végén, Brooklynban is megjelentek a plakátok az utcán. De mennyire hihető a világ végének képe abban a környezetben, amely maga sokkal inkább megjeleníti a világ végét?
És különben is: “Perhaps it is time for architects (and Hollywook, and the fashion industry, and the news media and…) to curb their pandering to the culture of distress that is at the heart of, among other things, so-called ‘deconstructivism’ to reconsider the infantile celebration of wounding, to stop uncritically indulging the soft pornographic fascination with the human or the architectural body rent and torn.”

Párizsban töltött első két hónapja alatt legalább három olyan kiállítást láttam, amely a város részleges vagy totális lerombolásának ábrándjával játszott. Amit a Párizs-filmek nem jelenítettek meg, az a kiállítótermekben tört ki az elfojtott párizsi tudattalanból. Úgy tűnik, hogy különösen izgalmas érzés a saját otthont, a saját világot a képeken lerombolva látni, talán mint egy imitált ön-kasztráció videofelvétele. És utána örömmel veszi tudomásul az ember, hogy minden a helyén van.

A New York-ban a katasztrófafilmeknek nincs nehéz dolguk. A filmrendezők a King Kong óta minden évtizedben pártucatszor lebontják a város ismert épületeit, elárasztják a várost vízzel, homokkal vagy éppen állatokkal. Mintha a filmes megsemmisítés egyfajta ráolvasás volna, paradox módon a katasztrófa megelőzése, kiváltása annak filmes megfelelőjével. Vagy mintha a képzeletbeli rombolás tenné értékessé, törékennyé, mitikussá a várost és épületeit.

Mégis, 9/11 után azt gondolnánk, hogy annyira már nem izgalmas a new york-i felhőkarcolókat összedőlni látni: a valóság túltesz a filmes trükkökön. Peter Eisenman így ír a 2001 szeptemberi eseményekről: “The last blow to the society of spectacle was 9/11 when reality overtook the media. We could never make a science fiction like that. When reality overtook the media, you realize that being in New York near the event, the Heideggerian notion of being there, became more important than seeing it on media. A média mégis folytatja, és szállítja a Város megsemmisülésének újabb képeit. Csak a következő hetekben két film fogja képein katasztrófáknak kitenni a Várost.
